“Top Gun” is a classic American film released in 1986, directed by Tony Scott and starring Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a young naval aviator. The movie follows Maverick’s journey as he navigates the intense world of Navy fighter pilots and tries to find his place among the best of the best.

The story begins with Maverick and his radar intercept officer (RIO) Goose (played by Anthony Edwards) being accepted into an elite training program known as “Top Gun.” The program takes place at the Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California and consists of intense air combat training exercises.

Maverick quickly gains a reputation for his impressive flying skills but also for his reckless behavior. He clashes with his fellow trainee, Iceman (played by Val Kilmer), who represents everything that Maverick isn’t: disciplined, level-headed and focused.

As the training progresses, Maverick falls in love with one of the civilian instructors, Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood (played by Kelly McGillis). Charlie is initially put off by Maverick’s brash personality but eventually falls for him too. Meanwhile, Maverick must come to terms with his own demons from his past as a pilot.

One of the most iconic scenes in the movie occurs during a training exercise when Maverick engages in a dangerous game of “chicken” with Iceman. Their planes fly dangerously close to each other before Iceman pulls away at the last second, causing Maverick to spin out of control. Goose is ejected from their plane and dies upon impact with the canopy.

Maverick is left traumatized by Goose’s death and struggles to continue flying. However, he eventually overcomes his fears and returns to Top Gun for one final mission against enemy planes over international waters.

In an epic dogfight scene, Maverick uses all his training and skills to outmaneuver the enemy planes and emerge victorious. He is hailed as a hero by his fellow pilots, and he finally comes to terms with Goose’s death.

The movie ends with Maverick graduating from Top Gun and being offered a position as an instructor. He accepts the job but not before flying a final tribute to Goose, where he performs a maneuver known as the “flyby” over the ocean.

“Top Gun” was a massive box office and cemented Tom Cruise’s status as a Hollywood superstar. Its thrilling aerial sequences and iconic soundtrack, which features the hit song “ My Breath Away” by Berlin, have made it one of the most beloved movies of its era.

Top Gun is a classic 1986 American action drama film that tells the story of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise, as he navigates his way through the elite pilot training program at the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School, known as Top Gun. Directed by Tony Scott and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Top Gun was a massive box office success and became an iconic cultural touchstone for its portrayal of aerial dogfighting and masculine bravado.

The movie begins with Maverick and his Radar Intercept Officer Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) flying their F-14 Tomcat against two Soviet MiG-28s over the Indian Ocean. After returning to their aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise, Maverick and Goose are sent to Top Gun to hone their skills against other elite pilots in preparation for potential future engagements with Soviet aircraft.

At Top Gun, Maverick clashes with his rival Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer), who believes that Maverick is reckless and dangerous. Maverick also becomes romantically involved with his flight instructor Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood (Kelly McGillis), which further complicates his already tumultuous life.

Throughout the film we see stunning aerial sequences of high-speed chases and intense dogfights between fighter jets set to an iconic soundtrack featuring songs such as “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin and “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins. The visuals are breathtaking, especially considering that this movie was made before CGI technology was widely available.

Aside from its technical achievements, Top Gun is also notable for its depiction of masculinity. The film’s characters are all hyper-masculine archetypes ? from the swaggering heroism of Maverick to the tough love of Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf (Tom Skerritt) ? complete with homoerotic undertones that have been the subject of much academic study. However, the film also manages to subvert some of these tropes, such as when Maverick abandons his cocky demeanor and shows vulnerability in a scene where he mourns the loss of his friend Goose.

Despite its critical reception at the time ? many reviewers dismissed it as shallow and formulaic ? Top Gun has since become a beloved classic that has spawned parodies and homages across popular culture. Its mix of thrilling action sequences, catchy music, and iconic characters make it an enjoyable watch for anyone looking for a bit of ‘80s nostalgia.

As a child, I was moved by the movie “The Bad News Bears Go to Japan” where Japanese professional baseball players and American actors performed in front of a large audience. This made me fall in love with the movie. This blog is my review of the movie that I actually saw. Please use it as a reference when renting movies.

For a long time, in between housework,
I would go to the movie theater to watch films and then write reviews of the movies in a diary which I stored away in a closet.
When I showed these reviews to Azesan, he suggested turning them into a website.
I am grateful for this wonderful opportunity. I may be nearing the end of my life, but if reading my reviews can move the hearts of younger people,
I think that would be wonderful.
It may even become a catalyst for various realizations and changes in their lives moving forward.
